Philadelphia: City of near-champions, Phillies, Union and Eagles

  • February 13, 2023

A few months ago, being a sports fan in the city of Philadelphia seemed like the best thing that could happen to someone, all its teams were fighting for championships, in mid-February the reality has changed, neither the Philadelphia Phillies, nor the Philadelphia Union, nor the Philadelphia Eagles have achieved the task of being champions.

The bitterness has reached a higher level in the “City of Brotherly Love” as three teams have lost consecutive finals, so we review the bitter endings in the last editions of the World Series, MLS Cup and Super Bowl for the cradle of the Independence of the United States.

Philadelphia Phillies lost the World Series

In order of incidence, the first team to reach the championship game was the Phillies, who surprised everyone by going from being the wild card in the National League to defeating the San Diego Padres to face the Houston Astros to lift the Commissioner’s Trophy for the third time in history.

The Cinderella story did not materialize, the Phillies were defeated by the Astros in six games (4-2) so the fast since 2008 remains for this team.

Philadelphia Union lost the MLS Cup

In the same week came the MLS Cup 2022 and the possibility of the first championship in the history of the young Philadelphia Union franchise.

To do so, they had to defeat Los Angeles FC at home, the game resulted in a very exciting 3-3 draw that ended up being decided on a penalty shootout in favor of the Southern Californians.

Phildelphia Eagles lost Super Bowl LVII

Super Bowl LVII finally arrived and the Eagles had a 10-point lead (24-14) at halftime against the Kansas City Chiefs.

However, Patrick Mahomes‘ magic was appreciated and Philadelphia could not get the second Vince Lombardi Trophy in its history despite Jalen Hurts‘ four touchdowns (three rushing).
