In his memoir, ‘Spare’, Prince Harry revealed that he had forgotten the protocol by which he had to ask his grandmother’s permission to marry.
In the book, the Duke of Sussex recalls that it was his secretaries Ed Lane Fox and Jason Knauf who reminded him that there was a “royal rule” in which Queen Elizabeth II had to give approval for a marriage.
“It didn’t make sense – a grown man asking his grandmother’s permission to marry? I don’t remember Willy asking her before he proposed to Kate. Or my cousin Peter asking her before he proposed to his wife, Autumn. But come to think of it, I did remember Dad asking permission when he wanted to marry Camilla,” Harry wrote.
“The absurdity of a 56-year-old man (Charles) asking his mother’s permission had slipped my mind at the time,” he added.
He chose a time when his grandmother was in good spirits
Harry reveals that the time he chose for it was a family weekend trip to Sandringham, when they were out hunting.
“Hunting trips always put Grandma in a good mood. Perhaps she would be more open to thoughts of love,” Harry wrote.
But he recalls that when he finally met his grandmother alone, she had a frown on her face, so apparently she wasn’t in such a good mood.
“I saw her waiting for him to speak, and not waiting patiently. Her face radiated, ‘Get out of here,'” he wrote. “I coughed. ‘Grandma, you know I love Meg very much, and I’ve decided I’d like to ask her to marry me, and I’ve been told that, uh, I have to ask your permission before I propose.’ “
“Do you have to?” the monarch replied.
” ‘Uhhhm… yes, that’s what your staff told me, and my staff told me too. That I have to ask your permission,'” Harry recalled.
“I stood completely still, as still as the birds in my hands. I stared into her face, but it was unreadable. At last she answered, ‘Well, then, I guess I have to say yes,'” she replied.
The answer momentarily confused Harry, who, upon reacting, thought, “I finally realized: She’s saying yes, you muppet! He’s giving me permission. Who cares how he says it, you just have to know when to take yes for an answer,” he wrote.
“So I mumbled, ‘OK. OK, grandma. Good. Fabulous. Thank you so much. Thank you so much,'” he concluded.
