And then there were two. The two finalists have been decided after Manchester City’s thumping 4-0 win (5-1 on aggregate) over Real Madrid. So there are two scenarios: Manchester City win their first Champions League title, or Inter Milan secures their fourth European crown.
The two sides have had contrasting paths to the final. Manchester City had a far more challenging time as they faced Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Copenhagen, where they finished top of the group. Then, in the round of 16, they faced Red Bull Leipzig, beating them 8-1 on aggregate. Their next challenge was Bayern Munich, one of the most in-form teams in Europe. However, the club put the German giants to the sword, beating them 4-1 on aggregate over the two legs.
However, their most impressive performance came against Real Madrid, a team that had eliminated them the previous year. After drawing the first leg 1-1, they put in one of the best performances in their history, scoring four past a helpless Thibaut Courtois.
On the other hand, Inter Milan’s start to the Champions League campaign was tough as they were drawn into the Group of Death with Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Viktoria Plzen. After losing their opening match, Inter Milan won two on the trot defeating Viktoria Plzen and Barcelona. They would then secure a 3-3 draw away to Barcelona, which was the impetus the team needed to qualify for the knockouts.
Since then, their path has been far simpler as they got favourable draws against Portuguese outfits Porto and SL Benfica in the round of 16 and quarter-final, respectively. After beating them, they face their city rivals AC Milan who they defeated 3-0 on aggregate to book their place in the Champions League final for the first time since 2010.
