Ronaldo sculpture unveiled in Istanbul ahead of Champions League final

A cardboard sculpture of CR7 is on display outside of the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the Champions League legends featured in FedEx’s Champions Unboxed campaign.

The company has made four cardboard sculptures depicting some of the most iconic moments in the Champions League final history.

In addition to Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Bale, and Lionel Messi also have their sculptures made by renowned artist Laurence Valliéres.

Ronaldo’s incredible header against Chelsea in the 2008 UCL final is the subject of one of the sculptures, which has been created using 130 recycled cardboard boxes.

“It was a really exhilarating project to work on; creating the sculptures with recycled FedEx cardboard was an exciting new challenge and it was truly enjoyable to mark the historic heroes of previous Champions League finals in such a unique way,” Valliéres said (via Goal).

Messi’s celebration against Manchester United in 2009, Gerrard helping Liverpool complete the “The Miracle of Istanbul”, and Gareth Bale’s crazy overhead against Liverpool in 2018 are the other moments depicted in the project.

UEFA Champions Festival is being held over four days in Istanbul this week. Fans have a chance to take a closer look at the sculptures and meet the artist ahead of the UCL final between Manchester City and Inter.
