Haaland showed “shades of Ronaldo” in Champions League final

The Norwegian superstar claimed his first Champions League trophy with Manchester City.

Rio Ferdinand has compared Erling Haaland’s mentality to that of Cristiano Ronaldo after the Champions League final.

Manchester City defeated Inter 1-0 to clinch their first-ever European title on Saturday. Haaland didn’t score for the Citizens, but his unselfish display was enough to earn him praise from Ferdinand.

“It’s the mindset,” the Manchester United legend said of Haaland. “I mean, that’s the separator. That separates the good from the great. This guy is going to be relentless, you can see it.”

Ferdinand went on to compare Haaland to Ronaldo, who is leading the competition’s all-time goalscoring charts.

He added: “I see shades of Cristiano in the mentality. When you look in his eyes it’s not just about selfish me wanting to be the focal point and score every single goal and every ball has to come to me.

“He’s about the functionality of the team and he’s playing his role perfectly.”

Ronaldo’s influence on Haaland is not limited to his mentality. Speaking before the final, the Man City star admitted he draws inspiration from CR7’s incredible finishing skills.

“For me the best at this (movement in the penalty box) is Cristiano,” Haaland said.

”Because he takes a movement, and another one, then he goes. I’ve been watching him a little bit in games and so on.

“Also, with him the timing and the finishing, that’s why he’s been scoring so many goals.”
