Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is in a positive and confident moment right now of his boxing career and that is why he is so eagerly seeking out a fresh opponent to do battle with.
He seems to want to prove himself in lots of different weight categories in boxing and that is why he has to pick his opponent very carefully.
He was already completely dominated by Dmitry Bivol and lost that fight hands down.
Amid many disagreements with the Russian fighter’s demands for a rematch, Alvarez has started looking for a new opponent who is also heavier than him.
Enter one of the most important veterans in the sport today who is still active, Gambian-Swedish native Badou Jack.
At 39 years of age, we are talking about the current WBC cruiserweight champion, a fighter who weighs over 30 pounds more than Canelo. The fight is in the works
Amer Abdallah of Skill Challenge Promotions spoke to Boxing King Media and said: “I’ve been dealing directly with Canelo’s team. Skill Challenge Promotions is leading this. We’re talking directly to Canelo and, of course, we’re promoting, managing and overseeing Badou.
“There is an intention to have the fight. I think of the five or six terms that are in there, we agree on most of them. Canelo is a living legend. He’s an icon in the sport.
“He’s arguably the face of boxing … the financial terms are agreed, the date is agreed, everything is there, it’s just the weight is the point of contention.
“If you want to move up to cruiserweight, then you have to fight at cruiserweight, and I think that’s where the hesitation is. I get it, Canelo is a super middleweight.
“Badou was a super middleweight. You can’t ask a guy who’s around 205, 210 pounds, to fight at super-middleweight or light heavyweight, or slightly above that.”
Canelo is no stranger to fighting heavier opponents.
Although he was dominated by Dmitry Bivol during that fight, Canelo has already fought at light heavyweight.
In 2019, Alvarez faced Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight title and won by knockout in round 11.
