Home and Away Attendances from the Carabao Cup First Round – 10th August 2023

In this article, we take a look at the home and away attendances from the Carabao Cup First Round which played out in midweek.

Gillingham pulled off a ‘cupset’, this time against Southampton with a comfortable 3-1 win as Ashley Nadesan broke the deadlock early in the first half and Robbie McKenzie’s double put Neil Harris’ side firmly in the driving seat. Carlos Alcaraz got one back for Championship side but it was only a consolation.

League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon produced a surprise late comeback to shock Championship outfit Coventry City, with the hosts coming from behind to knock the Sky Blues out of the competition at the first hurdle.

Facing a team ranked two divisions higher than themselves, Crewe Alexandra won on spot kicks against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening.

The Railwaymen went ahead on the stroke of half time through skipper Luke Offord, but that goal was cancelled out by Black Cats starlet Chris Rigg, who became the League Cup’s youngest-ever scorer when he levelled for the hosts in the second period.

In the shootout, Liverpool loanee Harvey Davies was between the sticks for Crewe. The teenager saved Pierre Ekwah’s penalty as the League Two team keep a 100% success rate from 12 yards to win 5-3 on penalties.

Newly appointed Doncaster boss Grant McCann enjoyed a return to the MKM Stadium for the first time since his exit from the Club to face his ex-employers Hull City in a Yorkshire derby.

When the Tigers scored inside three minutes courtesy of Oscar Estupinan, the visitors might have feared what was in store for the night, but striker George Miller was the saviour, at the double either side of the break for League Two team Doncaster in a 2-1 victory.

Miller notched his 50th senior career goal in the process as McCann’s men advanced to Round Two.

Just 38 minutes into Salford’s game at Preston, the Ammies had stormed into a 2-0 lead over the Lilywhites and had been looking good for a place in Round Two. Ben Woodburn and Duane Holmes were on target for Neil Wood’s men.

Preston however got themselves back in it to earn a 2-2 draw with Connor McLennan scoring both goals for North End which was how it finished after 90 minutes before the tie went straight to penalties at Deepdale.

Preston’s Ryan Ledson missed the first spot kick for the hosts and, after all four Salford takers converted, Mads Frokjaer blasted his spot-kick wide to give the League Two team a 4-2 victory in the shootout.
